The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) manages and controls the national road network on behalf of the Department of Transport. Its 22 197km network includes provincial roads it manages on behalf of the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West provincial governments.These roads are the country’s single biggest public asset and critical to South Africa’s future economic and social trajectory.

SANRAL activities are focused on four pillars, namely: Roads, Road Safety, Stakeholders and Mobility.

SANRAL has a primary mandate to manage and control the national road network and take charge, amongst others, of the development, maintenance and rehabilitation of national roads.

Road Safety
SANRAL supports the Safe Systems approach to road safety which involves not only the provision of safe road infrastructure, but also a commitment towards the further roll-out of educational and awareness programmes that will lead to changed behaviour among all road users.

SANRAL serves a wide spectrum of stakeholders ranging from road users who commute on the road network on a regular basis to communities who live in close proximity to the roads. As a state-owned entity SANRAL also reaches out to stakeholders in all three spheres of government – national, provincial and local.

The Research for Community Access Partnership (ReCAP) is a six-year programme of applied research and knowledge dissemination funded the UK Government through the Department for International Development (DfID). The overall aim is to promote safe and sustainable rural access in Africa and Asia through research and knowledge sharing between participating countries and the wider community.

There are two components under ReCAP: the Africa Community Access Partnership (AfCAP) and the Asia Community Access Partnership (AsCAP). The programme runs until 2020.
